The Capitol Riot and Police Brutality

Posted On January 8, 2021

America is seeing yet another episode which will most definitely leave a mark in history.

Angry Trump supporters have breached the Capitol in Washington DC. The reason behind this is that they cannot stand the fact that Trump has lost the election, and according to Trump’s tweets, he cannot comprehend it either.

The BLM protests, which started almost a year ago with the murder of George Floyd, amongst countless other black community members, are highly relevant to what happened on Wednesday. The BLM protests were triggered by police brutality against people of colour. This is an issue which has been going on for way too long, and the people have had enough. The BLM protests were peaceful protests where people just sat or laid down on the ground in silence and were turned into places of chaos and violence by the police, such as what happened in Minneapolis on the 30th of May where a joint patrol of Minneapolis police and Minnesota National Guard personnel unlawfully shot 37/40mm impact projectiles at people peacefully standing on the front porches of their homes. People were teargassed, arrested, beaten up, shot at, and killed too.  Despite all this, many, such as Candace Owens, insisted on portraying these protests as mainly riots where only looting, damaging and destroying of property took place.

The police were more than ready to use violence without any restrictions on people protesting for, quite literally, their right to live. This has been proven to not be the case when it comes to white people. Further showcasing white supremacy in America.

Focusing on the protests occurring at the Capitol, there are many pictures and videos all showing people breaking in. Windows were broken, doors were hit until cracked open, and walls were climbed as if nothing. Property was and keeps on getting destroyed and damaged, as the police do absolutely nothing. This pro-Trump mob stormed the Capitol, in a failed attempt to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s win. The difference is in the fact that, if these insurrectionists were black, or Muslims, they would have been shot right away, as has happened before. Instead, we see police officers opening the barrier for them, actually letting them in.

We see police officers happily taking selfies with these rioters and helping ‘protesters’ walk down the stairs after storming the U.S. Capitol. So far, only 69 arrests have been made in regard to this protest. Whilst the BLM protests counted thousands of people arrested. This, in my opinion, is plain injustice.

Yesterday was not a random occurrence of a few disgruntled white people.

To quote what President Trump had said in one of his Tweets back in July 2020, “Anarchists, Agitators or Protestors who vandalise or damage our Federal Courthouse in Portland, or any Federal Buildings in any of our Cities or States, will be prosecuted under our recently re-enacted Statues & Monuments Act. MINIMUM TEN YEARS IN PRISON. Don’t do it”. Now, instead, on the 6th of January 2021, he seems to have forgotten about his own words, as he says, on a video statement “You have to go home. We have to have peace. Go home. We love you, you are very special.” Trump has not eaten his own words, in fact he has “forgotten them” as he always seems to do when something does not suit his personal agenda.

America is known for its frequent use of violence, even in occasions where it is not needed. Racism, as well, is not something new. Things need to change and they need to change now. The distinction between white people and people of colour, especially in situations like the ones mentioned above, is not something which should be tolerated anymore.
