Due to the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic, the world is going through a pretty rough time right now. Despite this, the world still goes on and the work still needs to get done. In addition to this, the idea of ‘hustle culture’ is still very much present.
For those of you who are not familiar with the term, ‘hustle culture’ basically means dedicating most of your day to work and always being on the go. Most of us fall victim to this, sometimes without even knowing. Our days are filled with appointments and deadlines to be met. Most days are so busy that they seem to slip by us and we seem to have grown accustomed to this. However, with all this time on our hands since we’re locked indoors, it’s only normal for us to feel a little out of place. We’re so used to having no time that suddenly, it feels like we have too much time – and this is no easy adjustment.
Unlike health care professionals, delivery men and others (who we should all be thankful for), students are quite lucky to be able to safely work from home. However, working from home also sometimes means having to work twice as hard to motivate yourself.
Right now, social media is being bombarded with vloggers and influencers who claim to be ‘hustling in quarantine’. Everyone is posting pictures of their daily workouts, their quarantine outfits and their new found love for baking. Even though this is admirable and ideal, you shouldn’t feel guilty for not doing as much. Think of it this way; you are probably being as productive as you were B.C. (Before Corona). It only seems like you are being unproductive because now, you have a lot more time on your hands.
It is normal to get wrapped up in ‘hustle culture’ and feel pressure to take advantage of all this free time to pick up a new hobby, learn a new language or to get a head start on studying for your exams. That new show on Netflix, that book you’ve been meaning to read for a year and Jamie Oliver’s 30-minute recipes can be quite tempting – and that is perfectly okay! We should keep in mind that (even if not directly) we are still going through a pandemic. These are some stressful times and stress affects everyone differently.
Occasionally sleeping in does not mean you’re lazy. It is simply an act of self-care. I am not at all saying that every time you feel unmotivated, you whip out the pandemic card because – let’s face it, you would just be fooling yourself! All I’m saying is, everyone deserves a break – especially during these times where the only entertainment you get is from your home.
Working on something half-heartedly is bound to have an impact on the quality of your work. So next time you feel unmotivated, ask yourself; “Do I need a break? Or do I need to find better ways to motivate myself?”, the rest is up to you!
Don’t beat yourself up. Remember, YOU are your own boss. Instead of beating yourself up, take this time to take care of yourself. There will probably be no better time than this to become a better version of yourself.
