Students demand Free Parking at Campus Hub as CP6 is closed for Graduation Ceremonies

Posted On October 30, 2021

Students are organising a petition appealing to the relevant authorities to give them free parking at the Campus Hub whilst upper Car Park 6 is closed.

Students were notified on Thursday that the car park would be closed for the entire month of November in order to set up marquees where the guests of the graduates could watch the live streamed ceremony. The graduation ceremonies will be held in Sir Temi Zammit hall however, due to the current Covid-19 restrictions in place, guests are unable to attend.

In an attempt to alleviate the parking problem, the University has opened the football ground temporarily while Car Park 6 remains closed. The organiser of this petition, medical student Abigail Magro, has deemed this as unsatisfactory. In a statement to Insite, Magro said, “Considering the parking problem present, the University should have found other alternatives. The marquees could have been set up in the football ground itself, which is much larger than the car park. The football ground is not a feasible alternative for students who have placements at Mater Dei Hospital, as it is 2km away which would take 40mins a day for a student to make it to their placement and back, all while carrying heavy bags and in this particular month, struggling in the rain.

The closest option available would be in Campus Hub, which currently costs €2 per day. In the period where Car Park 6 would be closed, the total fee would go up to €64. This is the reason which has spurred on the petition, to create a new feasible option for this month.
