Make a Difference with NYP!

Posted On June 24, 2021

The National Youth Parliament (NYP) is an annual event hosted by Kunsill Nazzjonali taż-Żgħażagħ. NYP gives the opportunity to youths aged between 13 – 35 to join themed ‘parties’ and draft a resolution, culminating in a session in parliament in which the motion is presented, debated and voted upon. Ultimately, the resolutions are presented to the Prime Minister, the Opposition Leader and the President to be discussed on the national agenda. Various proposals discussed during NYP have been taken up over the years with the most monumental being the Declaration of Climate Emergency and the lowering of the voting age to the age of 16.

There are five themes for this year’s edition. Youths aged between 13 and 16 will be tackling ‘Sustainable Hunting and Animal Rights’ and ‘Public Spaces for Recreational Use’. Over 17s will be debating ‘Parliamentary Reform: from Election to the Legislature’, ‘Church and State: Should there be a State Religion’ and ‘Agriculture and Food Security’.

If you feel like this is out of your league, worry not! Prior to the actual plenary in parliament, various workshops are organized by KNŻ to help participants develop their skills.

Applications close on the 9th July 2021. Click on the following link to apply – https://knz.org.mt/nyp/
